The latest English edition of L’Osservatore Romano includes an article on the importance of the veil in the life of nuns.
Mother Anna Maria Canopi, the Benedictine foundress of Mater Ecclesiae Abbey at Lake Orta, Italy, writes that “the meaning of the veil is clear. The nun, consecrated in virginity to be exclusively Christ’s bride, must remove herself from the gaze of other possible suitors and lovers.”
“By preventing her eyes from wandering, the veil helps her keep her heart’s gaze more directly focused on God in the contemplation of his face that she ever seeks and longs for,” she adds. “The veil is also the sign of the modesty that conceals her, in a certain sense, from her spouse himself.”
