Card Sarah: Cardinals Can Be Gravediggers of the Church

Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship, writes in his book “The Power of Silence”, that during a conclave the Cardinals should submit to the will of the Holy Spirit: “If we thwart the Holy Spirit by miserable, petty human calculations, secret meetings, and media consultations, we run headlong into tragedy and we are gravediggers of the divine nature of the Church” (p. 112).

“Secret meetings” could be a reference to the so called St Gallen Mafia that was meeting in the Swiss town Sankt Gallen. The group, headed by liberal Cardinal Godfried Danneels, plotted since 1996 to elect a leftist pope identifying their prime papal contender as Jorge Bergoglio.
