Distractions in the Rosary

Sometimes, when we Christians try to spread the recitation of the Holy Rosary as a way of treating Our Lady every day, we meet people, even of good will, who excuse themselves by saying that they are often distracted by it and that "to pray it badly it is better not to pray it at all", or something similar. Pope John XXIII taught that "the worst rosary is the one that is not prayed". We can tell our friends that, instead of not praying it, it is more pleasing to Our Lady to try to pray it as best we can, even if we have distractions. It may also happen that, as St. Alphonsus Liguori writes, "if you have many distractions during prayer, it may be that the devil is very annoyed by this prayer".

Some have compared the Rosary to a song: Our Lady's song. For this reason, even if at times we do not have "the words" completely in mind, the melody will lead us, almost without realizing it, to keep our thoughts and hearts focused on Our Lady.

Unintentional distractions do not cancel out the fruits of the Rosary, nor of any other vocal prayer, as long as we strive to avoid them. St. Thomas points out that a threefold attention can be paid to vocal prayer: the correct pronunciation of all the words it consists of, paying more attention to the meaning of those words, and paying special attention to the end of the prayer, that is, to God and to what is being prayed for. The latter is the most important and necessary attention, and it can be given even to people who are not very literate or who do not understand well the meaning of the words they pronounce, and "it can be so intense that it takes the mind away from God".

If we make an effort, we can pray the Rosary better and better: taking care of the pronunciation, the pauses, the attention, stopping for a few moments to consider the mystery we are beginning, perhaps offering those ten Hail Marys for a specific intention (the Universal Church, the Roman Pontiff, the intentions of the bishop of the diocese, the family, priestly vocations, the apostolate, peace and justice in a certain country, a matter that concerns us. ...), trying to ensure that these "roses" offered to Our Lady do not become frayed or withered by routine or by giving way to more or less voluntary distractions.... To avoid all distractions will be very difficult; sometimes, practically impossible, but Our Lady also knows it and accepts our desire and our effort.

In order to pray it with devotion, it will be convenient to reserve an opportune hour for it. "A sad way of not praying the Rosary is to leave it until the last minute.

"At the moment of going to bed, one recites it, at least, in a bad way and without meditating on the mysteries. Thus, one hardly avoids the routine, which stifles true piety, the only piety." "You always put off the Rosary for later, and end up omitting it because of sleep. -If you have no other time, say it in the street and without anyone noticing. Besides, it will help you to have the presence of God.

The Rosary has the advantage that it can be prayed anywhere: in church, in the street, in the car..., alone or with the family, while waiting in the doctor's office, or in line to pick up some forms. Few Christians can sincerely say that they do not find time to pray "the prayer most loved and recommended by the Church".

One day, the Lord will show us the consequences of having prayed the Holy Rosary with devotion, but also with some distractions: disasters that were avoided through the special intercession of Our Lady, help for loved ones, conversions, ordinary and extraordinary graces for us and for others, and the many who benefited from this prayer and whom we did not even know.

This prayer, so effective and pleasing to Our Lady, will be in many moments of our life the most effective way to ask, to give thanks. Also to make reparation for our sins: "Immaculate Virgin, I know that I am a poor wretch, that I do nothing but increase the number of my sins every day...". You told me that this is how you spoke to Our Mother the other day.

"And I advised you, of course, to pray the Holy Rosary: blessed monotony of Hail Marys that purifies the monotony of your sins.
