The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem published a May 12 statement on the death of the famous journalist Shereen Abu Aqleh, 51.
According to eyewitnesses, Shereen was shot in the head by an Israeli sniper who did not cease firing even after she went down, preventing others to assist her. She was covering an Israeli attack of Jenin camp on Wednesday morning.
Shereen who had been wearing a helmet and a PRESS label, was shot in an unprotected area under her ear, suggesting that she was deliberately targeted. Her home was raided by Israeli forces after she was killed. The Patriarchate asks [in vain] that Shereen’s murderers be brought to justice.
Shereen was born in a Catholic family in Jerusalem where she lived. She held a US passport and worked for Al Jazeera for 25 years.
Another journalist, Ali Samouri, was shot in the back but survived. 144 Palestinian journalists have been wounded by Israeli forces since 2018.
