"The Savior walked, his body bent with the weight of the Cross, his eyes swollen and as if blind with tears and blood, his step slow and difficult because of his weakness; his knees trembled, he crawled almost behind his two companions in torture. And the Jews laughed, the executioners and the soldiers pushed him ". In the fourth sorrowful mystery of the Rosary we contemplate Jesus with the Cross on his shoulders on the way to Calvary "We are sad, living the Passion of Our Lord Jesus. -See with what love he embraces the Cross. -Learn from Him. -Jesus carries the Cross for you: you, carry it for Jesus.
"But do not carry the Cross dragging.... Carry it plumb, because your Cross, thus carried, will not be just any Cross: it will be.... the Holy Cross (...).
"And surely, like Him, you will meet Mary on the way "
In the Way of the Cross we meditate that, in one of those narrow streets, Jesus met his Mother. He stopped for a moment. "With immense love Mary looks at Jesus, and Jesus looks at his Mother; their eyes meet, and each heart pours into the other its own sorrow. Mary's soul is flooded with bitterness, in the bitterness of Jesus Christ.
"O you who pass by on the way, look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow" (Lam 1:12).
"But no one notices, no one notices, only Jesus (...).
"In the dark solitude of the Passion, Our Lady offers her Son a balm of tenderness, of union, of fidelity, a yes to the divine will ".
The Lord continues on His way and Mary accompanies Him a few meters away to Calvary. Simeon's prophecy is being fulfilled with perfect accuracy.
"What man would not weep, if he saw the Mother of Christ in such atrocious torture?
"Her wounded Son... And we far away, cowards, resisting the divine Will.
My Mother and Lady, teach me to pronounce a yes which, like yours, is identified with the cry of Jesus before his Father: non mea voluntas..." (Lk 22:42). (Lk 22:42): not my will but God's will be done "15.
When pain and affliction afflict us, when they become more penetrating, let us turn to Our Lady, Mater Dolorosa, to make us strong and to learn to sanctify them with peace and serenity.
