The Sacrifice of the Mass, being essentially identical to the Sacrifice of the Cross, has infinite value. In every Mass infinite adoration, thanksgiving and reparation are offered to God the Father, independently of the concrete dispositions of those who attend and of the celebrant, because Christ is the principal Offerer and the Victim who offers himself. It follows, therefore, that there is no more perfect way of worshipping God than the offering of the Mass, in which his Son Jesus Christ is offered as Victim, acting himself as High Priest.
Nor is there a more perfect way to give thanks to God for all that He is and for His continual mercies to us: nothing on earth can be more pleasing to God than the Sacrifice of the altar. Every time Holy Mass is celebrated, because of the infinite dignity of the Priest and the Victim, reparation is made for all the sins of the world: it is the only perfect and adequate reparation, to which we must unite our acts of atonement. It is the only adequate sacrifice that we men can offer, and through it our daily chores, our pain and our joys can take on infinite value.
The Holy Mass "is truly the heart and center of the Christian world". In this Holy Sacrifice "is engraved what is most profound in the life of every man: the life of the father, the mother, the child, the old man, the boy and the girl, the teacher and the student, the educated man and the simple man, the nun and the priest. Of each one without exception. Here it is that the life of man is inserted, through the Eucharist, in the mystery of the living God".
The fruits of each Mass are infinite, but in us they are conditioned by our personal dispositions and, therefore, limited.
Our Mother the Church invites us to participate in the most sublime act that takes place every day, in a conscious, active and pious way10. In a particular way we must try to be attentive and recollected at the moment of the Consecration; in these moments we will try to penetrate into the soul of the one who is both Priest and Victim, in his loving oblation to God the Father, as it happened on Calvary. This Sacrifice will then be the focal point of our daily life, as it is of the whole liturgy and of the life of the Church. Our union with Christ at the moment of Consecration will be the fuller the greater our identification with the will of God, the greater our dispositions of self-giving. In union with the Son we offer the Holy Mass to the Father, and at the same time we offer ourselves for Him, with Him and in Him. This act of union must be so profound and true that it permeates our whole day and has a decisive influence on our work, on our relationships with others, on our joys and failures, on everything.
If, when Communion comes, Jesus finds us with these dispositions of surrender, of loving identification with the will of God the Father, what else will he do but pour out on us the Holy Spirit, with all his gifts and graces? We have many aids to help us live the Holy Mass well. Among others, that of the angels, who "are always present there in great numbers to honor this holy mystery. Joining them and with the same intention, we are bound to receive many favorable influences from this company. The choirs of the Church militant unite and join with Our Lord, in this divine act, to captivate in Him, with Him and through Him, the heart of God the Father, and to make His mercy eternally ours". Let us go to them to avoid distractions, and let us strive to take more loving care of this unique moment in which we are participating in the Sacrifice of the Cross.
