Dave Dela Cruz risked his health to save hundreds of relics from a storm surge in the Philippines on July 24.
Massive
flooding from heavy rains after Typhoon Carina also damaged the
Reliquarium chapel, which houses hundreds of relics in Marikina City.
Davee Dela Cruz is the administrator of the chapel, which was built in 2018.
Between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. on July 24, the city's river rose rapidly.
Dela
Cruz told NcRegister.com (July 30) that he has trouble walking and
suffers from an irregular heartbeat. Nevertheless, he made it through
the floodwaters to the Reliquiarum in the middle of the night.
He carried first the Blessed Sacrament, then the relics and finally the furniture and the organ to a higher floor.
The floor and steps were wet and he slipped from the second floor and fell down the steps.
His
first thought was that he might not survive the fall. He felt helped by
his guardian angel and was able to get up on his own.
Dela Cruz managed to save all the relics in the chapel.
Later, the chapel was cleaned by volunteers for the Sunday Eucharist.
