Bergoglio's unfortunate tweet

“The middle finger, which is higher than the others, reminds us of something essential: honesty,” Francis wrote on Twitter.com (February 2), adding that “to be honest means not getting entangled in the snares of corruption.”

Within minutes, the tweet had been seen 400,000 times and generated hundreds of mocking comments.

The middle finger insight was taken from an address by Francis to young people and catechists in Kinshasa. He spoke on the significance of each finger on the hand, and how they each supposedly carry “the gift of life.”

Francis' account deleted the tweet in less than an hour, but it is already immortalised.
