The FSSP has issued a brief statement today notifying that it has been informed that it will be the subject of an apostolic visit.
The commentary states that there is “no problem” (sic), but rather that it is a way for the Dicastery to which they now depend, and which did not previously do so, to get to know them better.
The names of the visitators are not known. Following is the communique of the FSSP:
Fribourg [Switzerland], 26 september 2024
The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP) has recently been informed by the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life of the opening of an apostolic visitation to the Fraternity. As the Prefect of this Dicastery himself made clear to the Superior General and his assistants during a meeting in Rome, this visit does not have its origin in any problem of the Fraternity, but aims to let the Dicastery know who we are, how we are and how we live, in order to give us the help we may need.
The last ordinary apostolic visitation of the Fraternity was carried out in 2014 by the Ecclesia Dei Commission. Since the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life has been dealing with the FSSP and other former Ecclesia Dei institutes for three years, it is now within the competence of this Dicastery to deal with the FSSP.
Fraternity of St. Peter
The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP) is a Society of apostolic life for priests and seminarians in full communion with the Holy See.
It was erected as a Society of Apostolic Life of pontifical right (they are not religious, they do not take vows). Founded in 1988, it is dedicated to the celebration of the Mass and the sacraments according to the extraordinary form of the Roman rite. The FSSP focuses on the formation of priests and the parish apostolate, maintaining a special fidelity to the liturgical and doctrinal tradition of the Church.
