A "weeping statue" of the Virgin Mary supposedly shedding tears of blood has attracted devotees to a chapel in Carcar City in Cebu province.

Many devotees believing the weeping statue to be a miracle have flocked to the chapel at Barangay Ocana, according to a report by GMA Cebu's Bexmae Jumao-as.

The image of Our Lady of Fatima had been in the chapel for 11 years, the report said.

Also, it said a five-year-old child was among the first to have seen the weeping of blood last Sunday.

A photo posted by GMA Cebu's Jumao-as showed what appeared to be tears of blood streaming down the image's face. The chapel's caretaker insisted this was not a gimmick, even as some devotees who visited the chapel became emotional while other devotees took photos of it.Still others offered prayers before the image, which they believe to be miraculous. On the other hand, some visitors believe the Virgin Mary wanted to send a message.Meanwhile, parish priest Fr. Marlito Binondo cautioned devotees against concluding that what happened is a miracle. For now, the image was protected with a layer of clear plastic, and devotees were asked to keep a safe distance from the altar where the image was placed. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
