A Syrian migrant was arrested for stabbing a female employee at an immigration office in Germany this week, according to reports.
The harrowing incident unfolded on Thursday morning in Wuppertal, a city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
A male suspect who "appeared harmless" entered the House of Integration without triggering any concern from security services, Bild reports.
Once inside, the man pulled a knife and repeatedly stabbed a 25-year-old woman before her colleagues intervened and subdued him, authorities say.
Police arrived and arrested the suspect, who was identified as a 20-year-old migrant from Syria.
Authorities say the suspect likely attacked the woman at random in retaliation for "disagreements" he was having with officials at a welfare office located in the same building.
"As far as we know, she was not the case worker in charge of the suspect," said a spokesperson for the Wuppertal public prosecutor's office.
It is unclear if the suspect will be charged with attempted homicide as he shows "certain indications of a mental illness," the prosecutor claims.
The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries that were not life-threatening.
An investigation is ongoing.
