Indonesia: Bishop Blesses Parody Cross

Purwokerto Bishop Christophorus Tri Harsono, Indonesia, blessed on Ascension Day a cross depicting a dancing Christ wearing an Indonesian hat and yellow scarf, to be used at Indonesia's Youth Day (June 26-30).

According to TraditionInAction.org, this parody of Christ represents the Lenger dance, a remnant of the Hindu cultural heritage used to worship the Indian fertility goddess Durga and recycled in the local fertility goddess Shridevi.

The hat represents the meeting of the Big Universe and the Small Universe, symbolising harmony. The yellow shawl represents the glory of human dignity, warmth, peace and love “in our relationship with Allah.” Allah means "God" in Arabic.

After a strong backlash, Harsono abandoned the use of the cross.
