The Lord passes close to our lives on countless occasions. At times he will ask us for much, in order to give us more; at other times for little things: the fulfillment of duty, to carry out at the appointed time the practices of piety that we have marked out in our plan of life, without giving room for laziness; to mortify our imagination and our memory in banal matters; to live with care the charity with those who are close to us; to indicate with affability the direction that we have been asked.... Perhaps the Lord will appear - perhaps when we least expect it - to invite us to follow him even more closely, perhaps without abandoning our chores in the midst of the world, but with the full surrender of the heart, according to our own state, without setting limits or conditions.
"We must know how to give ourselves, to burn before God like that light that is placed on the candlestick to enlighten those who walk in darkness; like those lamps that burn at the altar and burn until they are spent. And he asks this of all of us: each one in his place and in the state to which he is called, in the particular vocation that he has received from God. This vocation is the most important matter of life, and, once it is known, the business in which we must strive tenaciously, with the help of grace, until the last moment of our days.
