Bishop sued for destroying a Eucharistic miracle

A complaint has been lodged with the Public Prosecutor's Office against Archbishop Lorenzo Ghizzoni, 69, of Ravenna, following the alleged Eucharistic miracle of Savarna.

He is accused of contempt of religion, writes RavennaToday.it (29 November).

The alleged "miracle" began on 28 January 2023, when Manuela Segurini, the sacristan of the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Savarna, found a consecrated host on the floor, a phenomenon common in Novus Ordo churches and taken lightly by bishops and priests.

In accordance with liturgical practice, the host was immersed in water to dissolve it.

The next morning, the consecrated host took on a reddish colour similar to blood. This prompted the parish priest, Don Nicolò Giosuè, to order a series of scientific tests.

An initial analysis was carried out by Dr Cristina Antonini, an anatomopathologist. She confirmed the presence of biological blood material in conditions of exceptional preservation.

However, further tests carried out by the Azienda Unità Sanitaria Locale della Romagna (AUSL Romagna) ruled out the presence of human blood.

Now the Forlì lawyer Francesco Minutillo has filed a complaint on behalf of a group of believers.

The complaint states that the result of the analysis was communicated through 'an informal message on WhatsApp' and that the samples were destroyed, both of which are not in line with institutional procedures.

This raises the hypothesis that such actions constitute the crime of insulting or damaging things intended for worship.

Accordingly, Archbishop Ghizzoni, who is responsible, is suspected of having insulted an object of worship that is central to Catholic doctrine.

Other aspects worthy of investigation, the lawyer added, are related to the handling of the samples by Ausl Romagna and the possible lack of adequate documentation and supervision expected in a case of such importance.

"We will not stop until we know what happened to the biological samples of the Eucharist. We have asked for the immediate confiscation of any remaining residues," Minutillo continued.

"Strictly speaking, these are objects of worship, central symbols of the Catholic faith, and as such they must be treated with respect and certainly not as material to be disposed of without transparency".

The lawyer explains that this fight is not only about justice for the faithful, but also about the right to truth and respect for the faith of millions of people:

"We will not tolerate any negligence or attempt to trivialise a case of this importance, as has happened so far", writes the lawyer.
