Almost six years later, the Vatican has confirmed that "sanctions" have
been in place since 2018 against Peruvian Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani, a
member of Opus Dei.
On Saturday, the anti-Church blog ElPais.es
wrote that Francis had expelled Cardinal Cipriani from Peru, forced him
to stop wearing his cardinal's robes and restricted his public ministry.
ElPais.es
is the same blog that in the past has promoted a false case of abuse
without ever apologising for it, but instead launching a propaganda
campaign against the person who had exposed its journalistic
malpractice.
What is truly scandalous: There has never been a trial or investigation of Cardinal Cipriani by the Holy See.
The
prelate issued a statement on Saturday morning stating that he had
never sexually abused anyone neither in 1983 nor before or after, and
that the letter of complaint had never been given to him.
He also
said that "partial information is being published [by ElPais.es] that
seems to come from documents reserved by the Holy See and that not even I
have in my possession".
Francis simply received a letter from an accuser and acted on it.
For
InfoVaticana.com, this lack of transparency shows "once again that the
Vatican [of Francis] is closer to an authoritarian banana republic than
to a state where evangelical principles prevail and where the rights of
the individual are minimally respected".
