Projection of Baptism in daily life

In the Second Reading, St. Peter recalls that messianic beginning of Jesus, which was in the minds of many of those who listened to him and of which some of them had been eyewitnesses. You know," the Apostle tells them, "what happened in the land of the Jews, when John preached baptism, although it all began in Galilee. I am referring to Jesus of Nazareth, anointed by God with the power of the Holy Spirit, who went about doing good and healing those oppressed by the devil...14.

Pertransivit benefaciendo..., he went about doing good.... This can be a summary of Christ's life here on earth. This should be the summary of the life of every baptized person, since his whole life unfolds under the influence of the Holy Spirit: when he works, at rest, when he smiles or renders one of the countless services that family or professional life entails....

On today's feast we are invited to take renewed awareness of the commitments made by our parents or godparents, on our behalf, on the day of our Baptism; to reaffirm our fervent adhesion to Christ and the will to strive to be closer to Him every day; and to separate ourselves from all sin, even venial sin, since by receiving this sacrament we were called to holiness, to participate in the same divine life.

It is precisely this Baptism that "makes us 'fideles' - faithful, a word which, like the word 'sancti' - saints, was used by the first followers of Jesus to designate one another, and which is still used today: we speak of the 'faithful' of the Church "15. We will be faithful to the extent that our life - we have meditated on this so many times! is built on the firm and sure foundation of prayer. St. Luke has written in his Gospel that Jesus, after being baptized, was in prayer16. And St. Thomas Aquinas comments: in this prayer, the Lord teaches us that "after Baptism, assiduous prayer is necessary for man to gain entrance into Heaven; for, although by Baptism sins are forgiven, there remains nevertheless the inclination to sin that inwardly combats us, and there remain also the devil and the flesh that outwardly impugn us "17.

Together with gratitude and joy for the many good things that have come to us in this sacrament, let us renew today our fidelity to Christ and to the Church, which, on many occasions, will be translated into fidelity to our daily prayer.
