With the usual tasks we have to earn Heaven

With our usual work we have to earn Heaven. For this we must try to imitate Jesus, "who gave work a supereminent dignity, working with his own hands "

In order to sanctify our tasks, we must keep in mind that "all honest human work, whether intellectual or manual, must be carried out by the Christian with the greatest possible perfection: with human perfection (professional competence) and with Christian perfection (out of love for the will of God and in the service of mankind). Because done in this way, this human work, however humble and insignificant the task may seem, contributes to the Christian ordering of temporal realities - to manifesting their divine dimension - and is assumed and integrated into the prodigious work of Creation and of the Redemption of the world: work is thus elevated to the order of grace, it is sanctified, it becomes the work of God... "9.

In sanctified work - like that of Jesus - we will find an abundant field of small mortifications that translate into attention to what we are doing, in the care and order of the instruments that we handle, in punctuality, in the way we treat others, in the fatigue that is offered, in the setbacks that, without sterile complaints, we try to carry in the best possible way.

In our professional duties we will find many occasions to rectify our intention so that it will truly be a work offered to God and not just another occasion to seek ourselves. In this way, neither failures will fill us with pessimism, nor successes will separate us from God. Right intention - working with God's face - will give us that stability of spirit proper to people who are habitually close to the Lord.

We can ask ourselves today in our personal prayer if we try to imitate in our work the years of Jesus' hidden life: Do I have professional prestige and am I competent among those of my profession? Do I exercise human and supernatural virtues in my daily work? Does my work help my friends to come closer to God? Do I speak to them about the doctrine of the Church in those truths about which there is more ignorance or more confusion at the present time? Do I fulfill my professional duties to the full?

We look at the work of Jesus as we examine our own. And we ask him: "Lord, grant us your grace. Open to us the door of the workshop of Nazareth, that we may learn to contemplate You, with Your Mother Holy Mary, and with the Holy Patriarch Joseph (...), all three dedicated to a life of holy work. Our poor hearts will be stirred, we will seek You and we will find You in our daily work, which You wish us to turn into a work of God, a work of Love."
