As Bergoglio Struggles to Survive: Viva la Poesia!

The Vatican Press Office issued a press release yesterday announcing the publication of Francis' new book 'Viva la poesia! (Long live poetry!).

It appears while Francis is in a very serious health condition in Gemelli Hospital.

The book is edited by Father Antonio Spadaro SJ, former director of the Jesuit magazine La Civiltà Cattolica and now undersecretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education.

The press release begins with a quote from Francis, who surely has other problems at the moment:

"I like poetry very much... Poetry is full of metaphors. Understanding metaphors helps to make thinking agile, intuitive, flexible and sharp. Those with imagination do not become rigid (sic), have a sense of humour and always enjoy the sweetness of mercy and inner freedom".

Viva la poesia! is published by Edizioni Ares, which is close to Opus Dei. It brings together for the first time all the writings of Francis on poetry and literature written during his pontificate, covering Dante, Dostoevsky, Virgil, Borges, Hölderlin, Tolkien and many others.

The book concludes with an interview with one of the students of literature at the high school where the young Jesuit Bergoglio taught when he was not yet a priest.
