On Wednesday, Leo XIV appointed Monsignor Shane Mackinlay, who is in
favour of female deacons and the blessing of homosexuals, from Bishop of
Sandhurst to the more important Archdiocese of Brisbane.
From
April to June, his cathedral featured a pagan statue. This
'Transendence' exhibition at Bendigo Cathedral (previously named
Sandhurst) featured a Hindu deity. The artist who created the statue
explained that he was inspired by witchcraft and tarot cards. He wanted
to “embody the tension between earthly materiality and spirituality”.
There
were four other similar exhibits in notable locations in the area.
People were encouraged to visit them as part of a 'pilgrimage'.
One
of these, called 'Matter Becoming', was on display in the Catholic
hospital St John of God in Bendigo, which is also under the jurisdiction
of Archbishop Macinlay. This exhibition explores "the tension between
masculine and feminine energies".
Archbishop Macinlay received
significant opposition from Catholics, both clergy and laity, in the
form of letters, phone calls, emails and petitions.
He ignored the Catholics and confirmed that the statue would remain in the cathedral for the full three-month exhibition.
At
the end of May, three Catholics took matters into their own hands and
removed the statue from the cathedral. They got into trouble with the
police.
Leo XIV is surely aware of Monsignor Shane Mackinlay's
positions, who was a member of the 2023 and 2024 synods and among the
writers of the final document.
