IF THE BIBLE ALONE IS ENOUGH, WHY DID THE EARLY CHRISTIANS NEED THE CHURCH?🇻🇦
Many Christians today say, “The Bible alone is enough.” But this raises an important question: if that were true, why did the earliest Christians, who had no printed Bibles, depend on the Church?
1. The Bible Came From the Church
The first Christians didn’t carry Bibles as we know them today. In fact, the New Testament wasn’t compiled until the 4th century, when the Catholic Church discerned, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, which writings were inspired and which were not. Without the authority of the Church, we would not even know which books belong in the Bible.
2. The Apostles Taught by Word and Tradition
Before anything was written, the faith was handed down through oral teaching. St. Paul himself says: “Stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter” (2 Thessalonians 2:15). The early Christians trusted both Scripture and Apostolic Tradition, not Scripture alone.
3. The Bible Is Not Self-Interpreting
If the Bible were meant to stand on its own, we wouldn’t have thousands of conflicting interpretations today. From the beginning, the Church was the living authority that safeguarded the correct understanding of Scripture. That’s why St. Peter warned: “No prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation” (2 Peter 1:20).
4. The Church Came First
Christ founded the Church, not a book. Jesus said to Peter: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church” (Matthew 16:18). The New Testament was written within that Church, for that Church, and by members of that Church.
5. Scripture and Church Work Together
The Bible is the Word of God, but the Church is the guardian of that Word. Just as in the early centuries, Catholics today rely on the Church’s teaching authority (the Magisterium) to faithfully interpret Scripture without distortion.
Conclusion
The truth is clear: the Bible was never meant to stand alone. The early Christians needed the Church, and so do we. Without the Church, there is no Bible. Without the Bible, the Church would lack its inspired witness. Together, they form the foundation of Christian faith.
