And he said to them: Go into the whole world and preach the Gospel to every creature. All Christians should feel urged to fulfill these words wherever we are, with courage, with audacity, as John Paul II reminds us: "We Christians are called to apostolic courage, based on trust in the Spirit". We look around us and realize that there are many who do not yet know Christ. Even many who were baptized live as if Christ had not redeemed them, as if He were not really present in our midst. How many are walking today like those who attracted the mercy of Jesus, because they were like sheep without a shepherd , without a precise direction in their lives, disoriented, losing the best of their time because they do not know where to go! We too are filled with compassion, as the Lord was, for those people who, although humanly speaking seem to succeed at times, are in the greatest of failures because they do not feel and behave like children of God who are heading towards the House of the Father. What a pity if someone should fail to meet the Master because of our omission, because of the lack of that apostolic spirit!
We must communicate our zeal for souls to others so that they in turn may be messengers of the Good News that Christ has left to the world. In a thousand different ways, with one word or another, with exemplary conduct always, we must echo those words that Pope John Paul II pronounced in the birthplace of St. Francis, in Xavier: "Christ needs you and calls you to help millions of your brothers and sisters to become fully human and to be saved. Live with these noble ideals in your soul and do not yield to the temptation of the ideologies of hedonism, hatred and violence that degrade man. Open your heart to Christ, to his law of love; without conditioning your availability, without fear of definitive answers, because love and friendship have no end "11 , they last forever. And if ever we do not know what to say to our friends and relatives so that they feel committed to this divine task, the most joyful of all, let us think of how Xavier was won over for the great undertaking that the Lord was preparing for him, while he was doing his studies: "Reasons... What reasons would poor Ignatius give to the wise Xavier? Few and poor to operate the deep change in the soul of the friend. We must be daring and always trust in grace, in the help of Our Lady and the Holy Guardian Angels.
Let us ask the Lord to awaken in us the ardent love that inflamed St. Francis Xavier in his zeal for the salvation of souls..... Let us ask St. Mary that we may draw many with us so that they in turn may become new apostles.
