Like so many others after him, St. Dominic of Guzmán had a powerful weapon to win this battle, which at first seemed to be lost, for "he waged war against the enemies of the Catholic Church with a strong spirit, not by force or by arms, but with the greatest faith in the devotion of the Holy Rosary, which he was the first to propagate, and which he personally and through his children carried to the four corners of the world. 5 "Dominic rightly commanded his children, when preaching the word of God to the people, to devote themselves frequently and lovingly to instilling in the souls of those who heard them this way of praying, of which he had much experience. For he knew well that Mary, on the one hand, had so much authority before her divine Son that the graces he bestows on men are always provided by her as administrator and dispenser; and, on the other hand, she is naturally so benign and merciful that, having become accustomed to spontaneous assistance to the needy, she cannot in any way refuse help to those who ask for it. Thus the Church, especially through the Rosary, has always found in her the Mother of Grace and the Mother of Mercy, as she is accustomed to do.
Christians, out of filial instinct and on the express recommendation of the Popes, have turned to the recitation of the Holy Rosary in ordinary times and in the most difficult circumstances (public calamities, wars, heresies, major family problems...) and as an excellent means of thanksgiving. The advice of recent Popes has been constant, especially with regard to the Rosary in the family. The Second Vatican Council warned all the Christian faithful "to have great regard for the practices and pious exercises towards it recommended by the Magisterium throughout the centuries. And Paul VI authentically interpreted these words as referring to the Holy Rosary.
Let us examine today, when humanity is in such great need, with what love and trust we turn to our Lady through this grace-filled devotion. Let us think if at the moment of spreading the sound doctrine around us, and especially if we see that some of those closest to us are separating from our Lord, we go with faith to our Mother in Heaven.
