A great crowd gathered around the Lord, coming to him from every city1. And Jesus took advantage of the occasion, as so often, to teach them the mystery of the action of grace in souls by means of the parable of the sower. All those who listened to him were well acquainted with the conditions in which the work in the fields was done in that land of Palestine. The sower went out to sow his seed..... It is Christ himself who continually, even today, extends his reign of peace and love in souls, counting on the freedom and personal correspondence of each one. God meets in souls with situations as diverse as the soils that receive the same seed are different. In carrying out the sowing, some of it fell by the roadside, and was trampled underfoot and eaten by the birds of the air: it was completely lost, without bearing fruit. Later, when Jesus explains the parable to his disciples, he will tell them that the devil takes away the word of his heart. These souls, hardened by the lack of repentance for their sins, become incapable of receiving God who visits them. To this bad soil resembles the heart "which is trodden under foot by the frequent passage of evil thoughts, and so dry that it cannot receive the seed, nor can it germinate.
On the contrary, the soul that, in spite of its weaknesses, repents again and again, and tries to avoid the occasions of sinning and recommences as many times as necessary, will attract divine mercy. The humility that comes from recognizing one's sins, perhaps only venial sins, and one's defects, prepares the soul for God to sow in it and make it fruitful. Therefore, today, as we meditate on this parable of Jesus, it might be a good time for us to ask ourselves if every day we ask forgiveness for all those things that do not please the Lord, even in small things, and if we go to frequent Confession with a true thirst for cleansing.
Now is a good time to ask Jesus to help us to cast away from us everything, however small, that separates us from Him, not to make a pact with defects and attitudes that hinder the friendship that He offers us daily. "You have reached a great intimacy with this God of ours, who is so close to you, so deep in your soul..., but do you try to increase it, to make it deeper? Do you avoid letting little things get in the way that can cloud this friendship?
"Be brave! Do not refuse to cut off everything that, even slightly, causes pain to the One who loves you so much ".
