Jesus liked to converse with his disciples. St. John records in his Gospel his confidences at the Last Supper. "He conversed while he was on his way to another city - those long walks of the Lord - while he was walking under the porticoes of the Temple. He conversed in the houses, with the people who were around him, like Mary, seated at his feet, or like John, who had his head reclining on the breast of Jesus." He never refused to dialogue with those who approached him in the most diverse situations of culture, of time...: Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman who had gone to fetch water at the well of the town, a thief when his pain was at its greatest.... Jesus understood everyone and everyone was comforted by his words. And in this we must also imitate the Master. Sometimes we will have to overcome the tendency to remain silent, or the inclination to speak with little measure. And it will always be an opportunity to overcome the selfishness of being preoccupied with our own things in order to deal with the concerns of others.
The word, God's gift to man, must serve us to do good: to console those who suffer, those who for whatever reason are going through a bad time; to teach those who do not know; to kindly correct those who err; to strengthen the weak, bearing in mind that - as Sacred Scripture says - the tongue of the wise heals wounds7; to kindly lift up those who have fallen, as Jesus constantly does. We will show the way to many who are lost in life (...). Do you see? For me this is speaking": to enrich, to orient, to encourage, to cheer up, to console, to make the way pleasant? "I also discover that my person is enriched through conversation. Because to possess solid convictions is beautiful; but even more beautiful is to be able to communicate them and see them shared and appreciated by others."
Many of the people around us are lost in their pessimism, in ignorance, in the lack of sense of what they do.... Our words, always encouraging, should point out to many the paths that lead to joy, to peace, to discover their own vocation.... "That channel, that way, is the way to find God. And many will find Christ in those normal confidences full of positive meaning, which are given in the midst of everyday life.
