Are we generous with our time in the service of others?

"Man, the only creature on earth whom God has loved for himself, cannot find his fullness except in the sincere gift of himself to others. Pope John Paul II applies these words of the Second Vatican Council especially to woman, who "cannot find herself except by giving love to others". It is in love, in self-giving, in service to others that the human person, and perhaps in a special way the woman, fulfills the vocation received from God. When a woman puts the qualities received from the Lord at the service of others, then "her life and her work will be truly constructive and fruitful, full of meaning, whether she spends the day devoted to her husband and children or whether, having renounced marriage for some noble reason, she has given herself fully to other tasks. Each one in her own way, being faithful to her human and divine vocation, can and does realize the fullness of the feminine personality. Let us not forget that Mary, Mother of God and Mother of mankind, is not only a model, but also a proof of the transcendent value that can be attained by an apparently unremarkable life ".

Today, as we consider the generosity and fidelity of these women, let us consider what ours is like. Let us examine whether we contribute, also materially - with financial means - to the extension of the Kingdom of Christ, whether we are generous with our time, perhaps scarce, in the service of others? And if we carry out all of this with a profound joy, with the particular joy that generosity gives. Let us not forget at the end of our prayer that both in public life and in the hours of the Passion, and very probably in the days that followed the Resurrection, these women of whom St. Luke speaks to us today enjoyed a special privilege: they remained in more assiduous and more intimate contact with Mary than the disciples themselves. Here they found the secret of their generosity and constancy in following the Master. We turn to her to help us to be faithful and detached. With her we will only find occasions to serve, and in this way we will be able to forget ourselves.
