Eager to know Christ better

I tell you, not even in Israel have I found so much faith. What a high praise, with what joy the Lord would pronounce these words! Let us meditate today on what our faith is like and ask Jesus to grant us the grace to grow in it, day by day.

St. Augustine taught that to have faith is: "Credere Deo, credere Deum, credere in Deum, in a classic formula among theologians. That is: to believe God who comes to meet us and makes himself known to us; to believe all that God says and reveals, the truths that he communicates in that personal encounter; and finally, to believe in God, loving him, trusting him without measure. To progress in faith is to grow in these facets. Believing in God brings with it the serious concern to improve doctrinal formation, to grow in the knowledge of God. Today we can examine our eagerness to know God better and all that He has revealed to us; perhaps we could ask ourselves about our interest in spiritual reading, with whose assiduity we acquire, over the years, a firm foundation, and about our perseverance in the means of formation (circles, talks, retreats...), which perhaps we have the immense good fortune to find within our reach. The eagerness to know God better will also be concretized in fidelity to the truth revealed by God, proclaimed by the Church, protected and preached by her Magisterium.

Believing in God leads us to grow in our personal relationship with Him, to treat Him daily in prayer, in loving dialogue, as our Creator and Redeemer, who comes daily to meet us in the Holy Eucharist, in personal prayer, and on so many occasions in the midst of work, and in difficulties and joys.... Believing in God brings us to see him very close to our daily life.

The third aspect of faith-believing in God-is the crowning and joy of the other two: it is the love that every true faith carries with it. "Lord, I believe in You and I love You, I speak with You, but not as with a stranger, because in dealing with You, I am getting to know You and it is impossible for me to know You and not love You; but if I love You, I see clearly that I must strive to live, day after day, according to Your word, according to Your will, according to Your truth."
