On March 31, two elderly people, the priest Pierre Panon and a
companion, were stoned to death in the village of Xertigny in
northeastern France.
Pierre Panon was born in Strasbourg in 1948
and ordained a priest in the Diocese of Nancy in 1974. He served in
several parishes and held the position of vicar general (2012-2018).
The
attack took place in a small side street away from the village center.
Both victims were found lying on the ground. Bloodstained stones were
lying nearby.
A source close to the investigation described the attack to French media as "very violent."
A
male suspect, described as being in his thirties and "completely
unknown" to the local population, was arrested shortly after the
incident.
In the usual trivialization, the perpetrator was transferred from police custody to a psychiatric facility.
