Today, Pope Leo XIV
received the Prelate of Opus Dei, Monsignor Fernando Ocáriz, in an
audience. Ocáriz was accompanied by his Auxiliary Vicar, Monsignor
Mariano Fazio, an Argentinean.
According to OpusDei.org, the
brief meeting was characterised by an “atmosphere of trust”. Pope Leo
XIV expressed closeness and affection.
Leo XIV inquired about the
ongoing examination of the Statutes of the Prelature and listened
attentively to the explanations provided.
Opus Dei was partially
dissolved under Pope Francis (Motu Proprio Ad Charisma Tuendum, July
2022). Cardinal Gianfranco Ghirlanda SJ was the main architect of the
deconstruction.
The question is whether Leo XIV will restore the
original structure of Opus Dei, including consecrated laypeople, and
transfer its jurisdiction to the Dicastery for Bishops rather than the
Dicastery for the Clergy.
