The diocese of Chiclayo, Peru, the former diocese of Leo XIV, has had a
special relationship with Opus Dei and Aragon since 1968, writes
OkDiario.com (10 May).
The second bishop in its history, from
1968 to 1998, Monsignor Ignacio de Orbegozo y Goicoechea, of Spanish
origin, was a priest of Opus Dei.
He was responsible for the
ordination of hundreds of priests. During his 20 years at the head of
the diocese, Orbegozo also inspired a strong devotion among the faithful
to the founder of Opus Dei, Josemaría Escrivà de Balaguer.
When
Monsignor Robert Prevost became Bishop of Chiclayo in 2014, he
maintained the popular devotion to Escrivà and presided at a Eucharist
for thousands of people in the cathedral every 26 June in his honour.
Speaking
at a conference years before he became Pope, Monsignor Prévost said his
connection with Peru came about by chance when he was just 5 years old:
"When I was five years old, I don't know if I knew where Peru was, but I
had an uncle who worked here and he gave me - my aunt gave me a chullo
from Abancay - a wool hat with earflaps - in all colours".
