According to InfoVaticana.com, the Diocese of Barbastro-Monzón in Spain
and Opus Dei have reached a preliminary agreement that brings an end to
the dispute over the ownership and management of the Torreciudad shrine,
at least for now.
Founded by Monsignor Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, the shrine has been managed by Opus Dei since its inception.
According
to the terms of the agreement, while the bishop of Barbastro retains
the power to appoint the rector, he must select one of the names on a
shortlist proposed by the Prelature of Opus Dei.
The image of the
Virgin of Torreciudad will remain in the sanctuary. Twice a year, it
will be carried in procession to the old chapel, which is located a few
hundred metres from the current sanctuary.
Opus Dei will substantially increase the money it pays to the diocese.
According
to InfoVaticana.com, while the agreement does not necessarily resolve
all outstanding issues, it marks a significant turning point in the
dispute.
