Kenya: Benedictine Nuns Close Their Mission

The Benedictine Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart have closed their priory and the Chesongoch Mission Hospital following the murder of two priests in the Kerio Valley on Kenya's western plateau.

News of the closure, which is effective immediately and indefinite, was made public on social networks.

This decision followed the murder of Reverend Alloyce Cheruiyot Bett on 22 May, when he was shot dead after being attacked by bandits in the Kerio Valley.

A few days earlier, Reverend John Ndegwa Maina, the parish priest at Saint Louis Church in Igwamiti, Nyahururu Diocese, died in hospital from suspected poisoning after being found critically ill at the side of a highway in Laipikia District.

Sister Rosa Pascal OSB, prioress of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters, reports 'mental, emotional and psychological trauma' among the nuns and lay people working alongside them.

She tells the Fides agency that it is now impossible to run essential services due to the lack of personnel fleeing the region.

The Kerio Valley, located in north-western Kenya, has long been plagued by insecurity driven by banditry, cattle rustling, ethnic rivalries, the proliferation of arms and a weak police presence.
