Millionaire Cardinal

The Mexico City government has reimbursed Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera with more than 1.4 million pesos ($72,962) after he was overcharged when purchasing two luxury apartments in the Mítikah Tower in southern Mexico City.

The tower houses a shopping centre, offices and apartments, and is considered the tallest building in Mexico City.

Rivera, aged 83, is the former Archbishop of Mexico. He bought the two apartments, numbered 4201 and 4205, in February 2024 for 10 million pesos each ($522,000).

The Mexico City Treasury first appealed against the judge's decision to return the money, and then refused to comply with the order, for which the judge fined them.

Cardinal Rivera Carrera has lived in southern Mexico City since retiring. It is common for high-ranking church officials to secure residences after retirement, especially as Rivera Carrera has previously been the target of violent crime, including an attempted home invasion that resulted in the death of his security guard.
