According to the German bishops' conference, at least 66 Catholic
churches and chapels were closed and desecrated in Germany in 2024.
By 1 December, at least 46 churches or chapels had been profaned in 2025.
The
bishops' conference notes that not all profanations are published in
diocesan official bulletins, meaning the actual number of churches taken
out of use could be higher.
