The home of Nazareth, a model to be imitated by Christian homes

Before Heaven, that house of Nazareth shone with light, because there was the Light of the world. At the same time, it was a home that stood out for its cleanliness, for the good taste within its poverty, for the care of things.... Our Lady prepared the food many times, mended the clothes and made sure that that home was always welcoming. With what love would St. Mary serve Jesus and Joseph! How she would be attentive to those moments at noon when they took a break from work, or in the evening when they finished their work! In the warmth of the intimacy of that home, the Son of God grew up, until the time came that had been fixed from eternity to begin his preaching in cities and villages. He would always have in mind those walls and that poor place, but orderly and clean, humanly pleasant.

When, in his public ministry, Jesus returned to Nazareth, he would remember unforgettable moments with his Mother and St. Joseph. Among the things that St. Mary kept in her heart4 would undoubtedly be so many little ordinary events of her Son, which were the joy of her soul. "Let us not forget that almost all the days that Our Lady spent on earth were spent in a manner very similar to the days of millions of other women, busy taking care of their families, educating their children, carrying out the household chores. Mary sanctifies the most mundane things, what many wrongly consider as unimportant and worthless: daily work, the details of attention to loved ones, conversations and visits for reasons of kinship or friendship. Blessed normality that can be filled with so much of God's love.

God wants his children to be born, to live and be formed in a home, which is to be an imitation of that of Nazareth. Although a woman is called to perform vital functions in other works for the good of society, her dedication to the care of her home will occupy a central place in her life, for it is there that she exercises her motherhood over her children, the most excellent task she has received from the Lord. And husband and wife should not forget "that the secret of conjugal happiness is in the everyday, not in reveries. It lies in finding the hidden joy that comes from coming home; in the affectionate relationship with the children; in the daily work, in which the whole family collaborates; in good humor in the face of difficulties, which must be faced with sportsmanship; in taking advantage of all the advances that civilization provides us, to make the home pleasant, life simpler, and formation more effective".

In the Holy Family we have the model that we have to look at many times. "Nazareth is the school where the life of Jesus begins to be understood; it is the school where the knowledge of his Gospel begins. Here we learn to observe, to listen, to meditate, to penetrate the profound and mysterious meaning of this simple, humble and charming manifestation of the Son of God among men. Here we even learn, perhaps in an almost insensitive way, to imitate this life". How many times in our mental prayer have we entered that modest house in Nazareth and contemplated Jesus, Mary and Joseph as they worked, and in the many details they would have with each other, in their daily living together!

Let us examine today, together with the Holy Family, if our homes are a reflection of that of Nazareth: if we try to make Jesus the center of everyone's thoughts and love, if we keep awake the spirit of service, if we strive to make life pleasant for others; or if, on the contrary, there are frequent quarrels, if we are excessively preoccupied with our own affairs, if under the pressures of our environment we abandon those Christian customs that help us so much to keep God present: the blessing of the table, the recitation of some prayer in common, attending Mass together on Sundays or on some principal feast. ..
