Last week, Nicaragua’s government has expelled Father José Concepción
Reyes Mairena of the Diocese of León, reports AciPrensa.com.
This brings the total number of religious forced out of the country to 309.
Father
Reyes is a Nicaraguan and served as a formator at the Seminary of León.
He was detained and interrogated by immigration officials at Managua’s
international airport last week.
He had spent two years in Spain and was attempting to return to Nicaragua.
After questioning him about his trip and the reasons for his return, authorities denied him entry and sent him back to Spain.
According
to exiled researcher Martha Patricia Molina, more than 95% of those
expelled, exiled, or denied reentry are Nicaraguans.
In her
latest report, Nicaragua: A Persecuted Church (August 2025), Molina
documents 1,070 attacks against the Catholic Church and the prohibition
of more than 16,500 religious processions since 2018.
