Netanyahu and Trump Propose Reinterpreting the New Testament on the Eve of Holy Week

President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are reportedly pushing for an ideological revision of the New Testament to counter what they call an "anti-Semitic cultural war" in the West.

The objective is to neutralize texts that, according to them, fuel prejudices against Judaism and Zionism, while strengthening Christian support for Israel.

According to the Pentagon, several elements are allegedly being used as anti-Semitic "propaganda weapons," including:

  • Passages from the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation.

  • The Good Friday liturgy.

  • Writings of the Church Fathers.

  • The veneration of martyrs such as Simon of Trent.

  • Artistic works like Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ.

Specific examples include passages such as John 8:44, the Parable of the Wicked Tenants, or the reference to the "Synagogue of Satan" in Revelation. These texts were reportedly "deactivated" in previous decades through post-conciliar influences and pro-Israel lobbying.

Our Analysis

This is not a literal rewriting of the Biblical text (which would be impossible and absurd), but rather an interpretative and cultural campaign. The goal is for modern Christian readings to prioritize the alliance with Israel and reject any criticism of Zionism as "anti-Semitic."

This approach clashes with Catholic exegetical tradition: the New Testament must be read within its historical and theological context, free from current geopolitical agendas.

On the eve of Holy Week, a time to meditate on the actual Passion of Christ, this news raises a troubling question: is Scripture being instrumentalized for political ends?
