Wise words from Bishop Fellay

Bishop Bernard Fellay of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) spoke about papal authority during his sermon at the subdiaconate ordinations on March 21 in Zaitzkofen, Germany. Key points, slightly condensed

- We must clearly attribute to the Holy Father the highest authority on earth, the potentia suprema.

- Every authority on earth is conditional upon the purpose of the society it governs. The Church’s purpose is the salvation of souls.

- The Pope’s authority is ordered to this highest earthly end - the salvation of souls - and is therefore the highest authority.

- If that authority is misused and no longer directed toward this goal, it loses its strength.

- If authority diminishes or destroys the faith, it is an abuse.

- Today, papal authority - along with obedience and infallibility - is being detached from reality.

- It is reduced merely to the subject who holds the authority.

- Papal authority then hides behind infallibility: “I am assisted by the Holy Spirit.”

- Authority becomes like a Ferrari without gears: the engine makes noise, but the vehicle no longer moves.
