Archbishop José Rafael Quirós Quirós, 71, of San José, Costa Rica, has
ordered that kneelers are not to be placed in churches for the
distribution of Holy Communion, reports InfoVaticana.com.
This
measure is ordered in a circular dated 13 May. It is signed by the
Episcopal Delegate for Liturgy, Rev. Francisco Morales González.
"From now on, kneelers are not to be installed in churches for the distribution of Communion," the document states.
The
circular responds to questions raised in recent weeks regarding the
installation of kneelers for the faithful who wish to receive Communion
while kneeling.
It "argues" that the presence of kneelers could
lead some of the faithful to believe that receiving Communion while
kneeling is "the only form established by the Church".
The decree
also claims that kneelers could hinder access for elderly people or
those with mobility difficulties who are accustomed to receiving
Communion while standing.
