The company Google has confirmed that in the coming months it will begin releasing millions of mosquitoes in various areas of California. The (alleged) objective of this unusual measure is to reduce the incidence of ailments such as dengue, zika, or chikungunya fever, which are transmitted through the bite of these insects, as reported by The New York Post.
The operation will be carried out in selected counties across the state, although authorities have not yet released the full list of participating municipalities. According to the official statement, it will begin in mid-June 2026 and will extend throughout the boreal summer, which is the peak breeding season for the vector.
How the Strategy Works
So far, it is known that the released mosquitoes will be laboratory-bred males, which do not bite humans. These carry a natural bacterium called 'Wolbachia', which prevents the females they mate with from being able to transmit pathogens. The strategy has already been tested in other countries with encouraging results.
Monitoring and Community Outreach
California health authorities will oversee the project in coordination with the Google team, although the company has not detailed the budget or the total duration of the plan.
Notifications: Residents of the affected areas will receive prior notice.
