Francis canonized Mother Teresa of Calcutta on September 4, 2016, in a solemn Mass in St. Peter's Square, Vatican City, before more than 100,000 faithful. Known as the "saint of the poor," her canonization took place 19 years after her death, during the Jubilee Year of Mercy.
