A prefect in the service of the Jews?

Leo XIV's new female Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, Mexican Maria Montserrat "Montse" Alvarado comes from a distinct American ecosystem.

Born in Mexico City, she became a U.S. citizen in 2008.

The Becket Formation

Before arriving at EWTN in 2023, Alvarado spent roughly fourteen years at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, eventually serving as Vice President and Executive Director.

The organization has represented Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Protestants, and others in constitutional cases.

Accepting the Religious Freedom Impact Award in 2024, she stated: "Encountering the deep faith of people from other traditions changed my heart forever."

Board member of the Acton Institute

Alvarado is a board member of the Acton Institute. It represents free-market, anti-socialism, American libertarianism and generally a pro-Israel view. It was founded by a former homosexual who became a priest, Robert Sirico. Acton institute is named after the dissident Catholic Lord Acton (1834–1902) who was a leader of liberal Catholicism in the nineteenth century.

Many of Acton's prominent donors (DonorsTrust, Harry Bradley Foundation, DeVosFoundation) are either supportive of Israel or operate within networks where pro-Israel philanthropy is common.

Acton has spoken out against restrictions on online pornography.

Advisory Board of Philos

Public biographies have listed Alvarado as serving on the Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board of the Philos Project.

The Philos Project is arguably among the most influential Christian pro-Israel organizations in America. The stated mission is to strengthen Jewish-Christian relations, combat antisemitism, and foster support for Israel.

A "core funder" of the Philos Project is the Paul E. Singer Foundation. The Paul E. Singer Foundation's own mission includes support for "the future of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state". Singer's foundation explicitly lists LGBT equality as a funding priority alongside Israel and Jewish causes.

According to Alvarado herself, Philos is “very much pro defending the Jewish community" and teaching “about soft forms of anti-semitism which I think is really important".

Alvarado Criticizes "Pre–John Paul II" Approaches

Following the October 7, 2023 attacks, Alvarado told Religion News Service that she began monitoring Nick Fuentes' content because of what she viewed as troubling developments in some online Catholic discussions.

Alvarado observed what she described as: "weird online discussions on behalf of Catholic communities aligned with the far-right" that took "an ugly turn."

She criticized what she viewed as a resurgence of anti-Jewish attitudes and called for a stronger institutional response from Catholic leaders.

Most notably: "I would like to see every Catholic leader of a major organization come out and say, this was wrong. We should apologize and make a plan to move forward," she stated.

After that, under her leadership, EWTN aired more than a month of programming on antisemitism and Holocaust history, with Jewish scholars and historians, to counter Fuentes’ “dangerous rhetoric.”

"With Nick, it's been concerning to watch him dive deep into a pre-John Paul II understanding of who the Jewish people are and what the church calls us into as Catholics and more broadly as Christians," Alvarado said.

In an August 2022 video on Youtube.com, she said that “the idea that all Jews should become Christians is obviously wrong”.
