On May 30, the parish priest of Villanueva del Río y Minas, southern Spain, told parishioner José Antonio Hurtado, who lives in a homosexual “marriage,” that he may no longer receive Holy Communion.
Hurtado added on social media that the priest apologized on June 2 for the manner in which he had spoken to him. But the priest maintained that he could not deliver Holy Communion to a homosexual.
The Archdiocese of Seville is gathering information about the incident and is expected to issue a statement.
Supporters of the priest argue that he is fulfilling his duty to uphold Catholic teaching on marriage and the worthy reception of the Eucharist.
