On July 16, 1251, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Saint Simon Stock, General of the Carmelite Order, and promised special graces and blessings for those who wore the scapular. This devotion "has poured a mighty river of spiritual and temporal graces upon the world." The Church has repeatedly approved it with numerous spiritual privileges. For centuries, Christians have sought shelter under this protection of Our Lady.
"Wear the holy scapular of Carmel on your breast. Few devotions—and there are many very good Marian devotions—are so deeply rooted among the faithful, and have so many blessings from the Popes. Besides, that Sabbatine privilege is so maternal!"
The Virgin promised those who lived and died wearing the scapular (or the blessed medal of the Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which replaces it) the grace to obtain final perseverance; that is, a particular help so that those who are not in a state of grace may repent in the final moments of their lives. To this promise must be added the so-called Sabbatine privilege, which consists of deliverance from Purgatory on the Saturday following death, and many other graces and indulgences.
