Bishop Eleganti Questions Leo XIV Audience for Pro-Abortion Singer

Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Marian Eleganti criticizes on his blog Leo XIV’s July 31 audience with Patti Smith, 80 - a pro-abortion and pro-homosexual singer from Chicago: “The harmless encounter - which I imagine consisted mainly of an exchange of pleasantries, with hardly anything of great importance to the Church being discussed - raises questions for me.”

His main argument concerning the 'decline of the Petrine office' is that the papal office has been overshadowed by the personalities of individual popes:

Too much informality and media exposure. Bishop Eleganti criticizes spontaneous interviews, informal remarks, celebrity meetings, photo opportunities, travel, and highly publicized personal gestures. These can make the pope appear to be an international celebrity or a member of the establishment rather than a teacher of the faith.

Private audiences send messages. Meetings and photo opportunities with people who publicly oppose Catholic teaching may be interpreted as approval or normalization, particularly when the pope does not clearly correct their positions.

Clear teaching should take priority. Popes should spend more time praying, studying, governing the Church, consulting advisers, and issuing careful, authoritative teaching rather than giving spontaneous opinions or maintaining a demanding public schedule.

“Celebrity pope” culture. Bishop Eleganti presents John Paul II’s mass appeal, Benedict XVI’s books and interviews, and especially Francis’s personal style as examples of an increasing emphasis on the personality of the individual pope.
