The Diocese of Down and Connor has officially opened the canonization causes of Fathers Hugh Mullan and Noel Fitzpatrick, two courageous pastors who laid down their lives in the fulfillment of their priestly ministry in Northern Ireland.
In 1971, Father Hugh Mullan was struck by gunfire while administering the Anointing of the Sick to an injured man. Despite carrying a white flag as a sign of peace and religious service, he was cowardly shot in the back.
For his part, Father Noel Fitzpatrick gave his life under similar circumstances while rushing to the aid of a severely wounded 13-year-old girl, being struck by bullets as he administered the Last Rites and attempted to offer her spiritual comfort.
The witness of both priests reflects the supreme love of one who lays down his life for his sheep, remaining faithful to the altar and the sacraments amidst pain and persecution.
Let us join in prayer for the advancement of their beatification causes, asking the Lord that the example of these holy pastors may inspire the entire Church to serve courageously until their final breath.
