Peter was astonished by the catch they had made. The Lord revealed Himself to him through this miracle in a very particular way. Peter looked at Jesus and then threw himself at His feet, saying: "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man." He understood his own smallness before the supreme dignity of Christ. Then Jesus said to Simon: "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." Peter and those who had accompanied him in fishing brought their boats to land, left everything behind, and followed Him.
Jesus began by asking to borrow a boat, and He ended up keeping his entire life. And Peter would leave behind an indelible mark on so many souls that Christ Himself placed within his reach. He began by obeying in the small things, and the Lord revealed to him the magnificent plans He had for him, a poor Galilean fisherman, from all eternity. He could never have imagined the significance and value of his life. Thousands upon thousands of people lit their faith from the faith of those who followed Jesus that day—and most particularly from that of Peter, who would become the rock, the unshakable foundation of the Church.
Nor can we suspect the consequences of our own faithful following of Christ. Each time, He asks us for greater responsiveness, docility, and obedience to what He reveals to us in various ways. If we are faithful, one day the Lord will allow us to see the true reach of our following Him through our actions.
"Among those around you—apostolic soul—you are the stone fallen into the lake. By your example and your word, produce a first circle... and that one, another... and another... and another... Ever wider. Do you now understand the greatness of your mission?"
Let us not set limits on the Lord, just as Peter set none.
"If you are one of those heading into deep waters, hold your rudder firm. If you give yourself to God, give yourself as the saints gave themselves. Let nothing and no one deserve your attention enough to slow your course; you belong to God. If you give yourself, give yourself for eternity. Neither the waves nor the undertow will shake your foundations. God relies on you; put your shoulder to the wheel as well, and sail against the current (...). Duc in altum. Launch yourself into the waters with the boldness of those who are in love with God."
Our Mother Holy Mary, Stella Maris, Star of the Sea, will teach us to be generous with the Lord when He asks to borrow our boat and when He wants us to give Him our entire life. We have set no conditions to follow Him.
