Leo XIV praises the French Revolution’s motto of “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”.
Today in Paris, Leo XIV linked France’s revolutionary motto - “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” [or Death] - with the Gospel. Speaking to French civil authorities at the Élysée Palace, Leo XIV called the three principles “universal ethical imperatives” that “find in the Gospel message an inexhaustible source of inspiration and fulfillment.”
The motto stems from the demonic French Revolution, which unleashed severe persecution of the Church. During the revolutionary period, clergy and religious were executed, imprisoned, deported or forced into exile, while churches and religious institutions were suppressed.
