As September begins, Church tradition invites us to fix our eyes on the pierced heart of our Most Holy Mother. In her Sorrows, we contemplate the depth of her love and her perfect union with her Son’s sacrifice on the Cross.
The Church traditionally devotes the month of September to the devotion of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This commemoration reminds us that the Mother of God was not exempt from trials, but accompanied every step of Christ's Passion with absolute fidelity and immeasurable sorrow.
Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Doctor of the Church, beautifully expressed the magnitude of her suffering when he stated: "Mary was the Queen of Martyrs, because her martyrdom was longer and greater than that of all the Martyrs." Her martyrdom was not of the flesh, but of the soul, pierced by Simeon's prophecy and the self-giving at Calvary.
Meditating on the Virgin's compassionate tears teaches us to offer our own daily crosses and to find comfort in her maternal intercession when we go through moments of tribulation and spiritual dryness.
Let us begin this month by praying the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows and asking Our Lady of Sorrows to grant us the grace of true repentance, a pure love for the Cross of Christ, and perseverance in the faith until the end.
