🌈 Cardinal Tobin has “paused” the Latin Mass in New Jersey "until further notice."
The Mass in the Roman rite in Hackensack, New Jersey, has been “paused until further notice” at the request of Cardinal Joseph Tobin, Archbishop of Newark.
The development concerns Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where a weekly Sunday Mass at 12:30 p.m. began in February 2026. Parish priest Thomas Quinn announced the "pause" in the bulletin on September 20.
“This year we were happy to begin offering the Traditional Latin Mass on Sundays at 12:30, adding to the richness of the many charisms of our parish,” Rev. Quinn wrote. He said the community had benefited from the Mass, including by welcoming new members and deepening parish liturgical life.
But Rev. Quinn also revealed that the Archdiocese of Newark is reviewing “how and where the traditional Mass is celebrated.”
“Cardinal Tobin has asked me to meet with him regarding the future of the Mass here at Holy Trinity,” he wrote. “Until that time, he has asked that the 12:30 Mass be paused until further notice.”
No public explanation for what prompted the review has yet been given.
On August 19, reporting on NorthJersey.com wrote about this Mass that “the pews are increasingly filling with newcomers”.
