For the second year running, Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago wants to honour abortion politicians. In 2025, Senator Dick Durbin withdrew following protests by bishops. This year, Michael J. Sacks - who donated $600,000 to an Illinois initiative that provides abortion including at Planned Parenthood - is set to receive the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Nostra Aetate Award on 29 October.
Cardinal Cupich has defended the decision. In a statement issued yesterday, he wrote: 'Simply put, honouring individuals who do not share core Catholic teachings recognises their dignity, leadership role, and service to their community, without implying an endorsement of every statement or stance they maintain.'
